Jaroslav Pelikan - From Luther to Kierkegaard. PDF

PDF This is a book written and combined by a series of lectures but I have the hardback since 1950. This should be of value to students of both philosophy and church history. Examines the philosophy between Luther and Kierkegaard where they all were searching for a rational system and in the process misunderstood Luther. What haunted Kierkegarrd was the story of Abraham because their were moral implications. His question was, "Is there a teleological suspension of the ethical?" in philosophical terms. That is, can the moral law be set aside on the basis of a personal, existential encounter with God? Or is the Moral Law so eternal and so inviolable, as Kant and Fichte had supposed, that no such encounter could be either valid or binding?
The answer: God is the sovereign Lord, not bound by any set of principles or laws.
