Nini Roll Anker (born Nicoline Magdalene Roll) was a Norwegian novelist and playwright.
She is known as one of the most important authors of Norwegian new realism. Her writing also supports the views of the women's rights movement and the rights of the working class. In one of her most knowns novels "Det som Henger i en Tråd" (1935) she portrays the hard and difficult life of the seamstresses in the factories.
She was a prominent figure in the 20s and 30s. She was both an aristocrat and a rebel; a feminist, socialist and pasifist, but did have social relations with the Norwegian royal family. This gave her the nickname "the royal court communist".
She was born into and part of an upperclass enviroment, and at the age of 19 she married landowner Peter Anker. They settled at Knivsø and later at Rød mansion near Halden, Norway. During her marriage to Anker she worked to better the conditions of the families and workers who depended on the Anker estate.
Nini Roll Anker and Peter Anker divorced in 1907 and moved back to Molde.
In January 1910 she married Peter Anker's cousin Johan Anker, and moved to Vollen in Asker where she stayed for the rest of her life. Johan Anker became the love of her life and it was during this marrige her literary career really took off.
Both her husbands were cousins of women's rights activists Katti Anker Møller and Ella Anker.
