Jack Donahue - African-American Contributions to the First World War. PDF

PDF The US Government first experimented in having African-American soldiers in World War I. These soldiers saw something in France they never saw before in the United States: Unencumbered Freedom. They were able to walk the streets with white women and not worry about being lynched, they did not have to eat in certain locations in restaurants, drink from certain fountains, or sit at the back of the bus.

Having tasted freedom, French-style, they came home to the United States and started the first small sparks that eventually became the Civil Rights Movement.
