Just when I thought I couldn't love Lori Otto's writing any more than I already do, she gives us Crossroads. A novella that is as touching as it is sweet, as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming.
We get a glimpse into the life of Will Rosser. He's Jon Scott's younger brother, the middle of 3 boys. Jon, if you don't already know. is a key character in the Choisie series, Livvy Holland's love interest. He practically raised Will since they had a less than stellar childhood and now Will at 16 is off to Utah to say a final goodbye to his first love, Laila, since moving back to NYC a few months prior.
I honestly didn't know what to expect with this novella, but what the author flawlessly delivers is the seemingly simple tale of young love and the drive to make one last weekend together memorable. Watching through Will's eyes his desire to give Laila, his first love, a memory that will be remembered for the rest of their lives, was nothing short of perfection. I felt every emotion, every nervous moment that a 16 year old would experience when he thinks this could be the last time he sees his girl. In addition, that brotherly love between Jon and Will is ever present even while they are temporarily apart, and thoughts of things his brother told him, help guide Will when things don't go the way he wants.
The use of music as Will's escape, the thing he can use to soothe his brain when he needs to tune out a bit from life around him, was ideal. I loved that he enjoyed the classics and truly appreciated music for more than just it's melodies. Will is a smart young man and his natural ability, his flair for music might just be his true calling.
From the first words until the last, we watch Will morph from an infatuated teen, into a more centered young man with a future that will hopefully take him in a new direction. I have great expectations for this character and know that with both his brother's guidance and the imagination of the author, anything can happen. And I will wait patiently to go along for the ride.
This is a wonderfully written novella that will make true Lori Otto fans extremely happy and new ones want to discover more of her work. I was thrilled that familiar characters whom I adore made a few appearances and loved being introduced to newer key players in Will's life that I am hopeful I will meet again and soon.
Another huge 5 stars and very highly recommended!
