PDF A strong depiction of a strong and destructive family conflict by a 13 year old girl, Signe. The father is demanding, controlling and violent. The mother silent and anxious mother. While Signe has a great admiration for her father who challenges her curiosity and reflection, she has learned to identify his unstable reactions and she behaves carefully as expected. She protects her mother and brother. Signe acts as an adult. At the same time, she is still a child looking forward to Christmas and playing with her mates.
Hanna Ørstavik uses a simple language that makes the narrative so close to us and so pervasively strong. The family lives in a small place in Finnmark in the north or Norway. It is December. Everything is dark. Everything is cold. Everything is quiet. This context too contributes to a feeling of sadness and loneliness.

I did not read this novel. I listened to an audio CD. I am uncertain if I would have managed to read through the book. The narrative is repetitive and infinitely slow. Although no one can remain untouched when reading this strong story, there is nothing that motivates the reader to read further. I guess that I would have get bored reading the book.
