This short story is set in China under the fear and conformity of the One Child Policy.
When toddler Cheng leads his parents to a baby, screaming and shivering in the stream weeds near their farm, they, although fearful of reprisals, take in the infant girl, naming her Ming.
As Ming grows, helped along by Cheng, the family soon realise the little girl is special...
As things good and bad occur on the surrounding farms, and the authorities close in, this intriguing and beguiling tale really made me think. To me, this has a beautiful cautionary tale woven in a mystical undercurrent: Is man destroying life's precious entities and resources for personal selfish gain?
A highly enjoyable bitesize read, I shall be reviewing more of her works shortly!
